Subareolar abscess

Subareolar abscess is a medical condition that occurs in the breast tissue beneath the areola. It is also known as Zuska's disease and is more common in women who smoke or have had previous breast surgery.

Symptoms

The main symptom of a subareolar abscess is a painful lump in the breast, usually just beneath the areola. Other symptoms may include fever, nipple discharge, and skin redness.

Causes

Subareolar abscesses are caused by a blockage in the mammary ducts, which can lead to an infection. This can occur due to a variety of factors, including smoking, previous breast surgery, or breastfeeding.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of a subareolar abscess typically involves a physical examination and may also include imaging tests such as an ultrasound or mammogram. In some cases, a biopsy may be performed to rule out breast cancer.

Treatment

Treatment for a subareolar abscess usually involves antibiotics to clear the infection. In some cases, surgical drainage may be necessary. If abscesses recur, a procedure known as a duct excision may be performed to remove the affected ducts.
