1-Nitronaphthalene

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

1-Nitronaphthalene is an organic compound with the chemical formula C10H7NO2. It is a pale yellow solid that is slightly soluble in water but more so in organic solvents. It is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of certain dyes and as a nitrating agent in the production of various organic compounds.

Chemical Properties[edit | edit source]

1-Nitronaphthalene is a nitrated derivative of naphthalene, a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon. It has a nitro group (-NO2) attached to one of the carbon atoms in the naphthalene ring. This gives the compound its characteristic reactivity and properties.

The compound is a strong oxidizing agent, and can react violently with reducing agents. It is also a potential explosive, especially when mixed with other combustible materials.

Synthesis[edit | edit source]

1-Nitronaphthalene can be synthesized by the nitration of naphthalene using a mixture of sulfuric acid and nitric acid. The reaction is highly exothermic and needs to be carefully controlled to prevent overheating and possible explosion.

Uses[edit | edit source]

1-Nitronaphthalene is primarily used as an intermediate in the synthesis of certain dyes and pigments. It is also used as a nitrating agent in the production of various organic compounds.

Health Effects[edit | edit source]

Exposure to 1-nitronaphthalene can cause irritation to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. Long-term exposure can lead to more serious health effects, including damage to the liver and kidneys.
