2,2-Dimethylpropan-1-ol

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

2,2-Dimethylpropan-1-ol, also known as neopentyl alcohol, is an organic compound with the formula (CH₃)₃CCH₂OH. It is a colorless liquid that is used in various chemical syntheses and industrial applications.

Structure and Properties[edit | edit source]

2,2-Dimethylpropan-1-ol is a primary alcohol with a neopentyl structure. The molecule consists of a central carbon atom bonded to three methyl groups and one hydroxymethyl group. This unique structure gives it certain chemical properties, such as resistance to oxidation compared to other primary alcohols.

The compound has a relatively high melting point of 52°C and a boiling point of 113°C. It is slightly soluble in water, which is typical for alcohols with a branched structure.

Synthesis[edit | edit source]

2,2-Dimethylpropan-1-ol can be synthesized through the reduction of 2,2-Dimethylpropanal (neopentanal) using reducing agents such as sodium borohydride or lithium aluminium hydride. Another method involves the hydrolysis of neopentyl chloride.

Applications[edit | edit source]

Neopentyl alcohol is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of various chemical compounds, including esters and ethers. It is also used in the production of plasticizers, resins, and lubricants.

Safety and Handling[edit | edit source]

As with many organic compounds, neopentyl alcohol should be handled with care. It is flammable and can cause irritation to the skin and eyes. Proper protective equipment, such as gloves and goggles, should be used when handling this chemical.
