3-Mercaptopropionic acid
3-Mercaptopropionic acid (also known as 3-MPA or beta-mercaptopropionic acid) is a chemical compound with the molecular formula C3H6O2S. It is a colorless liquid with a strong, unpleasant odor.
Chemical Properties[edit]
3-Mercaptopropionic acid is a thiol and a carboxylic acid. It has a molecular weight of 106.14 g/mol. It is soluble in water and most organic solvents. It is a strong reducing agent and can react with oxidizing agents, alkali and alkaline earth metals, and halogens.
Synthesis[edit]
3-Mercaptopropionic acid can be synthesized by the reaction of acrylic acid with hydrogen sulfide in the presence of a catalyst.
Applications[edit]
3-Mercaptopropionic acid is used in the synthesis of chemical intermediates, polymer stabilizers, and pharmaceuticals. It is also used as a reducing agent in various chemical reactions.
