7-Methyl-α-ethyltryptamine
7-Methyl-α-ethyltryptamine (also known as 7-MeO-α-ET) is a psychedelic and hallucinogenic drug that belongs to the tryptamine class of compounds. It is structurally related to other tryptamine-based substances such as DMT, 5-MeO-DMT, and psilocybin.
Chemistry[edit | edit source]
7-Methyl-α-ethyltryptamine is a synthetic compound of the tryptamine class. Tryptamines share a core structure comprised of a bicyclic indole heterocycle attached at R3 to an amino group via an ethyl side chain. 7-MeO-α-ET is substituted at R7 of its indole heterocycle with a methyl (CH3) functional group CH3- but also has an ethyl chain attached to the alpha carbon. This alpha-ethyl substitution forms a propylamine chain with the terminal amine R-N.
Pharmacology[edit | edit source]
The exact mechanism of action of 7-Methyl-α-ethyltryptamine is not fully understood. However, like other tryptamines, it is believed to act primarily as a serotonin receptor agonist. It may also interact with other neurotransmitter systems. The psychoactive effects of 7-MeO-α-ET are believed to come from its efficacy at the 5-HT2A receptor as a partial agonist. However, the role of these interactions and how they result in the psychedelic experience continues to remain an object of scientific elucidation.
Effects[edit | edit source]
The effects of 7-Methyl-α-ethyltryptamine can vary widely depending on the dose and individual physiology. Common effects reported by users include visual hallucinations, altered thinking processes, and a heightened sense of empathy and sociability. However, negative effects such as anxiety, paranoia, and potentially harmful changes in heart rate and blood pressure can also occur.
Legal Status[edit | edit source]
The legal status of 7-Methyl-α-ethyltryptamine varies by country. In many jurisdictions, it is classified as a controlled substance, making its manufacture, distribution, and possession illegal. However, in some countries, it is legal to possess for personal use.
