8,9-Dehydroestrone

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

8,9-Dehydroestrone is a steroid and a metabolite of estrone that is formed by the enzyme 17β-Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase. It is less estrogenic than estrone and other estrogens.

Structure and Nomenclature[edit | edit source]

The structure of 8,9-Dehydroestrone is similar to that of estrone, with the exception of a double bond between the 8 and 9 positions. The nomenclature of 8,9-Dehydroestrone is based on the estrane steroid skeleton, with the addition of a keto group at the 3 position and a hydroxyl group at the 17 position.

Metabolism[edit | edit source]

8,9-Dehydroestrone is formed from estrone by the action of the enzyme 17β-Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase. This enzyme catalyzes the oxidation of the 17β-hydroxyl group of estrone to form a keto group, resulting in the formation of 8,9-Dehydroestrone.

Biological Activity[edit | edit source]

8,9-Dehydroestrone has less estrogenic activity than estrone and other estrogens. This is due to the presence of the double bond between the 8 and 9 positions, which reduces the ability of the molecule to bind to the estrogen receptor.
