ACell
ACell is a biotechnology company that specializes in the development and manufacturing of extracellular matrix (ECM) medical devices. These devices are used to facilitate the regeneration of damaged or lost tissues. ACell's products are used in a variety of surgical procedures, including wound care, general surgery, and orthopedic surgery.
History[edit | edit source]
ACell was founded in 1999 by Dr. Alan Spievack, a surgeon and researcher who was interested in the potential of ECM technology for tissue regeneration. The company's first product, an ECM device for wound care, was launched in 2007.
Extracellular Matrix Technology[edit | edit source]
The extracellular matrix (ECM) is a complex network of proteins and carbohydrates that provides structural and biochemical support to cells. ACell's ECM devices are derived from porcine urinary bladder matrix, a rich source of ECM proteins. These devices are designed to mimic the natural ECM in the body, providing a scaffold for cells to grow and regenerate tissue.
When an ACell ECM device is implanted into a patient, it is gradually resorbed by the body and replaced with new, healthy tissue. This process is known as remodeling.
Products[edit | edit source]
ACell's product portfolio includes devices for wound care, general surgery, and orthopedic surgery. These devices are available in various forms, including sheets, particles, and powders, to accommodate different surgical needs.
Clinical Applications[edit | edit source]
ACell's ECM devices have been used in a variety of clinical applications, including:
- Wound care: ACell's ECM devices can be used to treat a variety of wounds, including diabetic foot ulcers, venous leg ulcers, and pressure ulcers.
- General surgery: In general surgery, ACell's ECM devices can be used for soft tissue repair, reinforcement, and regeneration.
- Orthopedic surgery: ACell's ECM devices can be used in orthopedic surgery to facilitate the regeneration of bone and cartilage.
