AFC East
The AFC East is a division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL). It consists of four teams: the Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, and New York Jets. The division has a rich history in the NFL, featuring intense rivalries, numerous playoff appearances, and several Super Bowl championships.
History[edit | edit source]
The AFC East was formed as part of the NFL-AFL merger in 1970. The original lineup included the Bills, Dolphins, Patriots (then known as the Boston Patriots), and the Baltimore Colts. The Colts were replaced by the Jets in the 1970s, and the division has remained unchanged since then.
Teams[edit | edit source]
Buffalo Bills[edit | edit source]
Founded in 1960, the Buffalo Bills are based in Buffalo, New York. They have a passionate fan base known as the "Bills Mafia." The team plays its home games at Highmark Stadium.
Miami Dolphins[edit | edit source]
The Miami Dolphins, established in 1966, are based in Miami, Florida. They are the first team in NFL history to achieve a perfect season, which they accomplished in 1972. The Dolphins play their home games at Hard Rock Stadium.
New England Patriots[edit | edit source]
Based in Foxborough, Massachusetts, the New England Patriots were established in 1960. They have been one of the most successful teams in the NFL since the 2000s, largely due to the contributions of former coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady. The Patriots play at Gillette Stadium.
New York Jets[edit | edit source]
The New York Jets, originally founded as the Titans of New York in 1960, are based in East Rutherford, New Jersey. They share MetLife Stadium with the New York Giants. The Jets have a storied history, including a notable victory in Super Bowl III.
Rivalries[edit | edit source]
The AFC East is known for its intense rivalries, particularly between the Patriots and the other three teams. The rivalry between the Patriots and the Jets is especially fierce, often highlighted by close games and significant playoff implications.
Championships[edit | edit source]
Teams in the AFC East have won multiple Super Bowl championships, with the Patriots leading with six titles. The Dolphins have won two Super Bowls, and the Jets have won one. The Bills have appeared in four consecutive Super Bowls but have not won any.
Current standings[edit | edit source]
The current standings in the AFC East can be found on the NFL's official website or sports news outlets. The division is highly competitive, with teams regularly vying for playoff spots.
