ALT-803
ALT-803 is an immunotherapeutic agent that has shown promise in the treatment of various cancers and infectious diseases. It is a complex of an interleukin-15 (IL-15) superagonist mutant and an IL-15 receptor alpha (IL-15Rα) sushi domain-Fc fusion protein. This combination enhances the biological activity of IL-15, a cytokine that plays a crucial role in the activation and proliferation of natural killer cells and CD8+ T cells.
Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]
ALT-803 works by stimulating the immune system to target and destroy cancer cells. The IL-15 superagonist component binds to the IL-15Rα on the surface of immune cells, leading to the activation and expansion of natural killer (NK) cells and CD8+ T cells. These cells are essential for the immune system's ability to recognize and eliminate tumor cells.
Clinical Applications[edit | edit source]
ALT-803 has been investigated in several clinical trials for its potential to treat various types of cancer, including non-small cell lung cancer, melanoma, and bladder cancer. It has also been studied for its effectiveness in treating infectious diseases such as HIV.
Research and Development[edit | edit source]
The development of ALT-803 is part of ongoing research into cytokine therapy and immunotherapy. Researchers are exploring its use in combination with other treatments, such as checkpoint inhibitors and chemotherapy, to enhance its therapeutic effects.
Side Effects[edit | edit source]
As with many immunotherapeutic agents, ALT-803 can cause side effects, including fever, fatigue, and injection site reactions. More severe side effects may include cytokine release syndrome and autoimmune reactions.
