ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) is a global professional association seeking to advance heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC&R) systems design and construction. Founded in 1894, ASHRAE is dedicated to the advancement of indoor-environment-control technology in the HVAC&R industry.

History[edit | edit source]

ASHRAE was formed by the merger of two societies: the American Society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers (ASHVE) and the American Society of Refrigerating Engineers (ASRE) in 1959. The organization has since grown to include over 57,000 members worldwide, with a focus on building systems, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, refrigeration, and sustainability.

Mission and Vision[edit | edit source]

ASHRAE's mission is to advance the arts and sciences of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, and their allied fields. The society aims to serve humanity and promote a sustainable world through research, standards writing, publishing, and continuing education.

Standards and Guidelines[edit | edit source]

ASHRAE is known for its development of standards and guidelines that are widely used in the HVAC&R industry. Some of the most notable standards include:

  • ASHRAE Standard 55 - Thermal Environmental Conditions for Human Occupancy
  • ASHRAE Standard 62.1 - Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality
  • ASHRAE Standard 90.1 - Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings

These standards are used globally to ensure the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of building systems.

Research and Publications[edit | edit source]

ASHRAE funds research projects and publishes a wide range of technical literature, including the ASHRAE Handbook series, which is a comprehensive guide to HVAC&R technology. The society also publishes the ASHRAE Journal, a monthly magazine that covers industry news, technical articles, and case studies.

Education and Certification[edit | edit source]

ASHRAE offers a variety of educational programs, including online courses, seminars, and workshops. The society also provides certification programs for professionals in the HVAC&R industry, such as the Building Energy Modeling Professional (BEMP) and the High-Performance Building Design Professional (HBDP).

Global Outreach[edit | edit source]

ASHRAE has a strong international presence, with chapters and members in over 130 countries. The society collaborates with other international organizations to promote sustainable building practices and improve indoor environmental quality worldwide.
