Abiomed
Abiomed is a leading provider of medical devices that provide circulatory support. The company's products are designed to enable the heart to rest by improving blood flow and/or performing the pumping of the heart.
History[edit | edit source]
Abiomed was founded in 1981 by Dr. David M. Lederman, who was a pioneer in the field of artificial heart technology. The company's initial focus was on developing an artificial heart that could be implanted in the body to replace the function of a failing heart. Over time, the company has expanded its product line to include a variety of devices that provide different levels of circulatory support.
Products[edit | edit source]
Abiomed's flagship product is the Impella heart pump, which is the world's smallest heart pump. The Impella is designed to be inserted into the heart through a small incision in the leg, and it can provide partial or full support for the heart's pumping function. Other products in the company's portfolio include the BVS 5000 and AB5000, which are ventricular assist devices that can provide full support for the heart's pumping function.
Clinical Trials[edit | edit source]
Abiomed has conducted numerous clinical trials to demonstrate the safety and effectiveness of its products. These trials have shown that the company's devices can improve survival rates and quality of life for patients with heart failure and other cardiovascular conditions.
Future Developments[edit | edit source]
Abiomed continues to invest in research and development to improve its existing products and develop new technologies. The company is currently working on a next-generation Impella device that will provide even more support for the heart's pumping function.
