The Academia Nacional de Medicina was established on June 30, 1829, in Rio de Janeiro, then the capital of the Empire of Brazil. It was originally named the "Sociedade de Medicina do Rio de Janeiro" and was later renamed to its current title. The institution was founded by a group of prominent physicians with the aim of promoting medical science and improving public health in Brazil.

The mission of the Academia Nacional de Medicina is to foster the development of medical sciences and to contribute to the improvement of public health policies. Its objectives include:
