Accenture began as the business and technology consulting division of accounting firm Arthur Andersen in the early 1950s. In 1989, it separated from Arthur Andersen and was renamed Andersen Consulting. Following a series of disputes between Andersen Consulting and Arthur Andersen, Andersen Consulting adopted its current name, "Accenture", on 1 January 2001. The name "Accenture" is derived from "Accent on the future". The company went public on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in July 2001.
