Akathesia

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Akathisia is a movement disorder characterized by a feeling of inner restlessness and inability to stay still. It is a common side effect of certain medications, particularly antipsychotic drugs.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

Symptoms of akathisia may include restlessness, constant movement, and an inability to sit still. This can lead to feelings of discomfort and even distress. In severe cases, akathisia can be extremely debilitating and may contribute to a worsening of the patient's mental state.

Causes[edit | edit source]

Akathisia is most commonly caused by the use of certain medications, particularly antipsychotic drugs. Other drugs, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), can also cause akathisia. In some cases, akathisia may be caused by withdrawal from these medications.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for akathisia typically involves reducing the dosage of the offending medication or switching to a different drug. In some cases, additional medications may be prescribed to help manage the symptoms of akathisia. These may include beta blockers, benzodiazepines, or anticholinergic drugs.
