Alan Alda is an American actor, director, and writer, best known for his role as Hawkeye Pierce in the television series M*A*S*H. Born Alphonso Joseph D'Abruzzo on January 28, 1936, in New York City, Alda has had a successful career in film and television spanning several decades.

Alda was born in New York City to Robert Alda, a well-known actor, and Joan Browne, a former Miss New York. He attended Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains, New York, and later studied at Fordham University.

Alda's breakthrough role came in 1972 when he was cast as Hawkeye Pierce in the television series M*A*S*H. The show was a critical and commercial success, earning Alda numerous awards, including multiple Emmy Awards.
