Alastair Buchan

Alastair Buchan is a renowned neurologist and medical researcher known for his significant contributions to the field of stroke research. He is currently the Head of the Medical Sciences Division at the University of Oxford, where he also serves as the Dean of Medicine.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Buchan was born and raised in Scotland. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Edinburgh, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physiology. He then went on to earn his medical degree from the same institution. Following his graduation, Buchan completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

Buchan began his career as a clinical fellow at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh. He then moved to the United States to work as a research fellow at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). During his time at the NIH, Buchan conducted groundbreaking research on the pathophysiology of stroke.

In 1997, Buchan returned to the UK to join the faculty of the University of Oxford. He was appointed as the Head of the Stroke Prevention Research Unit, where he led a team of researchers in studying the prevention and treatment of stroke. In 2007, Buchan was appointed as the Head of the Medical Sciences Division at the University of Oxford.

Buchan's research primarily focuses on the pathophysiology of stroke and the development of new treatments for the condition. He has published numerous peer-reviewed articles in prestigious medical journals, and his work has been widely recognized for its impact on the field of stroke research.

One of Buchan's most significant contributions to the field is his research on the use of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) in the treatment of acute ischemic stroke. His work has helped to establish tPA as a standard treatment for the condition.

Buchan has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the field of medicine. These include the Queen's Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education, which he received in 2014 for his work on stroke research.
