Alexander Keith (1795 – 1873) was a Scottish-born Canadian politician and brewer. He is best known for founding Alexander Keith's Brewery in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Keith served as the Mayor of Halifax and was a prominent figure in the city's business and political life during the 19th century.

Alexander Keith was born in Halkirk, Caithness, Scotland in 1795. He emigrated to Nova Scotia in 1817, where he initially worked in the brewing industry.

Brewing Career[edit | edit source]

In 1820, Keith established the Alexander Keith's Brewery in Halifax. The brewery quickly became one of the most successful in the region, known for its India Pale Ale and other beers. Keith's brewery played a significant role in the economic development of Halifax and remains a well-known brand in Canada today.

Keith was actively involved in the political life of Halifax. He served as an Alderman before being elected as the Mayor of Halifax in 1853. He held the mayoral office for three terms, during which he focused on improving the city's infrastructure and public services.

Keith was married twice and had several children. He was a prominent member of the Freemasons and was involved in various charitable activities in Halifax.
