The alliance emphasizes the importance of local action and community involvement in creating healthier urban environments.

History[edit | edit source]

The Alliance for Healthy Cities was established in 2003 during the Global Conference on Healthy Cities in the 21st Century, held in Okinawa, Japan. It was formed under the auspices of the World Health Organization (WHO) as part of its Healthy Cities movement, which began in the late 1980s. The AFHC aims to expand the scope and impact of this movement by facilitating exchange of knowledge, experiences, and best practices among its members.

Its work has led to increased awareness and action on issues such as non-communicable diseases, environmental health, and health equity in urban settings. Through its collaborative efforts, the AFHC has helped cities develop comprehensive approaches to health that are inclusive, sustainable, and responsive to the needs of their communities.
