Alternative cancer treatments

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Alternative Cancer Treatments are non-traditional methods and therapies used in the treatment of cancer. These treatments are not part of the standard care, which includes surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. They are often used in conjunction with traditional treatments, but can also be used independently.

Types of Alternative Cancer Treatments[edit | edit source]

There are several types of alternative cancer treatments, including:

  • Herbal medicine: This involves the use of plants or plant extracts to treat illness. Some herbal medicines have been found to have anti-cancer properties, although their effectiveness is still being researched.
  • Acupuncture: This is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body. It is often used to manage cancer-related symptoms and side effects of cancer treatments.
  • Homeopathy: This is a system of alternative medicine that treats disease with minute doses of natural substances that in a healthy person would produce symptoms of disease.
  • Dietary supplements: These include vitamins, minerals, herbs, and other substances meant to improve overall health and boost the immune system.
  • Mind-body therapies: These therapies aim to enhance the mind's capacity to affect bodily function and symptoms. They include practices like meditation, yoga, and relaxation techniques.

Effectiveness and Risks[edit | edit source]

The effectiveness of alternative cancer treatments varies widely, and many have not been scientifically proven to be effective. Some alternative treatments can even be harmful, especially if they delay or replace proven treatments. It's important for patients to discuss any alternative treatments they're considering with their healthcare provider.

Regulation and Usage[edit | edit source]

In many countries, alternative cancer treatments are not regulated in the same way as traditional treatments. This means that the safety and effectiveness of these treatments can vary. Despite this, many people with cancer use alternative treatments, often in the hope of improving their quality of life or reducing side effects from traditional treatments.
