American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network[edit | edit source]
The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy affiliate of the American Cancer Society (ACS). Established in 2001, ACS CAN is dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by advocating for public policies that reduce cancer risk, increase access to care, and improve the quality of life for cancer patients and survivors.
Mission and Goals[edit | edit source]
ACS CAN's mission is to support evidence-based policy and legislative solutions designed to eliminate cancer as a major health issue. The organization focuses on:
- Increasing funding for cancer research and prevention programs.
- Ensuring access to affordable, quality health care for all individuals, particularly those affected by cancer.
- Reducing tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke.
- Improving the quality of life for cancer patients and survivors.
Advocacy and Policy Initiatives[edit | edit source]
ACS CAN engages in a variety of advocacy efforts at the local, state, and federal levels. Key initiatives include:
- Cancer Research Funding: Advocating for increased funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to support cancer research.
- Access to Care: Supporting policies that expand access to Medicaid and Medicare, and advocating for the protection of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
- Tobacco Control: Promoting comprehensive tobacco control policies, including higher tobacco taxes, smoke-free laws, and funding for tobacco cessation programs.
- Patient Quality of Life: Supporting legislation that improves palliative care and pain management for cancer patients.
Organizational Structure[edit | edit source]
ACS CAN operates through a network of volunteers and staff across the United States. The organization is governed by a board of directors and works closely with the American Cancer Society to align its advocacy efforts with the Society's mission.
Public Engagement[edit | edit source]
ACS CAN engages the public through grassroots advocacy campaigns, encouraging individuals to participate in "lobby days," sign petitions, and contact their elected officials about cancer-related issues. The organization also provides resources and training for advocates to effectively communicate with policymakers.
