Andrea Prader (December 23, 1919 – June 3, 2001) was a renowned Swiss pediatric endocrinologist who made significant contributions to the field of endocrinology and genetics. He is best known for his work in identifying and describing Prader-Willi syndrome, a complex genetic disorder affecting multiple systems in the body.

Andrea Prader was born in Samedan, Switzerland. He pursued his medical education at the University of Zurich, where he developed an interest in pediatrics and endocrinology. After completing his medical degree, Prader continued his training in pediatric medicine and endocrinology, which laid the foundation for his future research and discoveries.

Prader's career was primarily based at the University Children's Hospital Zurich, where he worked alongside other notable endocrinologists. His research focused on growth disorders, genetic syndromes, and hormonal imbalances in children.
Prader-Willi Syndrome[edit | edit source]
In 1956, Andrea Prader, along with his colleague Heinrich Willi, first described the condition now known as Prader-Willi syndrome. This syndrome is characterized by hypotonia, obesity, intellectual disability, and hypogonadism. Prader's work in identifying the clinical features of this syndrome has been crucial in advancing the understanding and management of the disorder.

Prader also developed the Prader scale, a tool used to assess the degree of virilization in individuals with ambiguous genitalia. This scale is widely used in the diagnosis and management of congenital adrenal hyperplasia and other intersex conditions.
