The Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) was a First World War army corps of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force that was formed in 1914 and operated during the Gallipoli Campaign. The corps was disbanded in 1916 and succeeded by the I ANZAC Corps and II ANZAC Corps.

Formation and Structure[edit | edit source]

The ANZAC was formed in Egypt in December 1914, comprising the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) and the New Zealand Expeditionary Force (NZEF). The corps was commanded by General William Birdwood. The initial structure included the 1st Australian Division and the New Zealand and Australian Division.

Gallipoli Campaign[edit | edit source]

The ANZACs are best known for their role in the Gallipoli Campaign, which began on 25 April 1915. The landing at Anzac Cove was intended to secure the Gallipoli Peninsula and open the Dardanelles for the Allied navies. The campaign was marked by fierce fighting and heavy casualties on both sides. Despite their efforts, the campaign failed to achieve its objectives, and the ANZACs were evacuated in December 1915.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

The legacy of the ANZACs is commemorated annually on Anzac Day, 25 April, in both Australia and New Zealand. This day honors the members of the ANZAC who fought and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. The term "Anzac" has become a symbol of bravery, mateship, and sacrifice.

Disbandment and Successor Units[edit | edit source]

In early 1916, the ANZAC was disbanded, and its units were reorganized into the I ANZAC Corps and II ANZAC Corps. These new formations continued to serve on the Western Front for the remainder of the war.
