Anzac

Anzac refers to the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, a military formation of the First World War. The term is also used to describe the soldiers from these countries who served in the Gallipoli Campaign and other battles during the war.

History[edit | edit source]

The Australian and New Zealand Army Corps was formed in 1915 during World War I. The corps was part of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force and was involved in the Gallipoli Campaign, which aimed to secure the Dardanelles Strait and open a sea route to the Russian Empire.

Gallipoli Campaign[edit | edit source]

The Gallipoli Campaign began on April 25, 1915, when Anzac troops landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula. The campaign was marked by fierce fighting and significant casualties on both sides. Despite their efforts, the campaign was ultimately unsuccessful, and the Allied forces withdrew in January 1916.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

The term "Anzac" has become a symbol of national pride and identity in both Australia and New Zealand. Anzac Day, observed on April 25 each year, commemorates the landing at Gallipoli and honors all Australians and New Zealanders who have served and died in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations.

Cultural Impact[edit | edit source]

The Anzac spirit is often invoked to describe the qualities of courage, mateship, and endurance demonstrated by the Anzac soldiers. This spirit is celebrated in various forms of art, literature, and film in both countries.
