Ara Darzi, Baron Darzi of Denham
Ara Darzi, Baron Darzi of Denham is a British-Armenian surgeon, academic, and politician. He is a leading figure in the field of surgery and healthcare policy.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Ara Darzi was born on 7 May 1960 in Baghdad, Iraq to Armenian parents. He completed his early education in Baghdad before moving to Ireland to pursue higher education. Darzi graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) with a degree in medicine.
Medical Career[edit | edit source]
Darzi is renowned for his contributions to the field of minimally invasive surgery. He has held several prestigious positions, including the Paul Hamlyn Chair of Surgery at Imperial College London. His research has focused on the development of robotic surgery and image-guided surgery.
Political Career[edit | edit source]
In 2007, Darzi was appointed as a Life Peer in the House of Lords, taking the title Baron Darzi of Denham. He served as the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department of Health and Social Care from 2007 to 2009. During his tenure, he authored the NHS Next Stage Review, which aimed to improve the quality of care within the National Health Service (NHS).

Baron Darzi has received numerous awards for his contributions to medicine and healthcare. He was knighted in 2002 for his services to medicine and surgery. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society and a member of the Academy of Medical Sciences.
