The Archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina is a group of islands located in the western Caribbean Sea, belonging to Colombia. The archipelago consists of three main islands: San Andrés, Providencia, and Santa Catalina, along with several smaller cays and islets.

Geography[edit | edit source]

The archipelago is situated approximately 775 kilometers northwest of the Colombian mainland and about 220 kilometers from the coast of Nicaragua. The islands are part of the Department of Archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina, which is one of the 32 departments of Colombia.

History[edit | edit source]

The archipelago has a rich history influenced by various cultures, including the indigenous Miskito people, Spanish colonizers, and English settlers. The islands were a strategic point during the colonial period and were often contested by different European powers.

Economy[edit | edit source]

The economy of the archipelago is primarily based on tourism, fishing, and agriculture. San Andrés, the largest island, is a popular tourist destination known for its beautiful beaches, coral reefs, and duty-free shopping.

Culture[edit | edit source]

The culture of the archipelago is a blend of African, European, and indigenous influences. The official languages are Spanish and English, and the local population also speaks San Andrés–Providencia Creole, an English-based creole language.

Environment[edit | edit source]

The archipelago is home to diverse marine and terrestrial ecosystems. The Seaflower Biosphere Reserve, designated by UNESCO, encompasses the archipelago and aims to protect its unique biodiversity, including coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass beds.

Transportation[edit | edit source]

The main modes of transportation within the archipelago include boats and small aircraft. The Gustavo Rojas Pinilla International Airport on San Andrés Island is the primary gateway for international and domestic flights.
