Asa Griggs Candler was born in Villa Rica, Georgia, on December 30, 1848. He was the son of Samuel Charles Candler and Martha Bernetta Beall. Candler grew up in a large family and received his early education in local schools.

In 1888, Candler purchased the formula for Coca-Cola from John Stith Pemberton for $2,300.
