Astelin

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Astelin is a prescription medication used primarily for the treatment of allergic rhinitis. It is a nasal spray that contains azelastine hydrochloride, an antihistamine, which works by blocking the action of histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms. Astelin is effective in treating both seasonal allergic rhinitis, often referred to as hay fever, and perennial allergic rhinitis, which occurs year-round.

Indications[edit | edit source]

Astelin is indicated for the relief of the symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis in adults and children. These symptoms may include sneezing, rhinorrhea (runny nose), nasal itching, and nasal congestion. It is also sometimes used off-label for the treatment of vasomotor rhinitis, a non-allergic form of rhinitis.

Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]

Azelastine hydrochloride, the active ingredient in Astelin, is a potent antihistamine. It works by inhibiting the H1 receptors, thereby preventing the action of histamine on these receptors. This action helps to reduce the allergic symptoms by preventing the effects of histamine, which include increased vascular permeability and formation of edema, pruritus, and bronchoconstriction.

Administration[edit | edit source]

Astelin is administered as a nasal spray. The usual dosage for adults and children 12 years of age and older is one or two sprays in each nostril twice a day. For children between the ages of 5 and 11, the typical dosage is one spray in each nostril twice a day. It is important to follow the prescribing information for proper administration and dosage.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Common side effects of Astelin include bitter taste, headache, drowsiness, and nasal irritation. Some individuals may also experience fatigue, sore throat, and epistaxis (nosebleeds). Most side effects are mild and tend to diminish with continued use of the medication.

Precautions[edit | edit source]

Patients with a known hypersensitivity to azelastine hydrochloride or any other components of Astelin should not use this medication. Caution is advised when using Astelin in individuals with severe renal impairment. Since drowsiness can occur with the use of Astelin, patients should be cautioned about engaging in hazardous activities requiring mental alertness and motor coordination, such as driving or operating machinery.

Interactions[edit | edit source]

Astelin may interact with other CNS depressants, potentially increasing the effects of drowsiness and sedation. Patients should inform their healthcare provider of all medications they are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements, to avoid potential drug interactions.

Conclusion[edit | edit source]

Astelin offers an effective treatment option for individuals suffering from allergic rhinitis. Its ease of use as a nasal spray and its ability to quickly alleviate symptoms make it a popular choice among both patients and healthcare providers. However, like all medications, it is important to use Astelin under the guidance of a healthcare provider to ensure its safe and effective use.
