Atrial branches of coronary arteries
Atrial branches of coronary arteries are small blood vessels that supply oxygenated blood to the atria of the heart. They are branches of the coronary arteries, which are the main blood vessels that supply the heart muscle.
Etymology[edit | edit source]
The term "atrial" comes from the Latin word "atrium", which means "entrance hall". This is a reference to the function of the atria as the chambers of the heart where blood enters. The term "coronary" comes from the Latin word "corona", which means "crown". This is a reference to the way the coronary arteries encircle the heart like a crown.
Anatomy[edit | edit source]
The atrial branches of coronary arteries originate from the right coronary artery and the left coronary artery. The right atrial branches supply the right atrium, while the left atrial branches supply the left atrium.
The right atrial branches usually include the sinus node artery, which supplies the sinoatrial node, and the atrioventricular node artery, which supplies the atrioventricular node. The left atrial branches usually include the circumflex artery, which supplies the left atrium and the back of the heart.
Physiology[edit | edit source]
The atrial branches of coronary arteries play a crucial role in the cardiovascular system. They supply oxygenated blood to the atria, which are the chambers of the heart that receive blood returning to the heart from the body and lungs. The atria then pump this blood into the ventricles, which pump it out to the body and lungs.
Pathology[edit | edit source]
Disease of the atrial branches of coronary arteries can lead to atrial fibrillation, a common type of irregular heart rhythm. This can cause symptoms such as palpitations, shortness of breath, and fatigue. It can also increase the risk of stroke.
