BMP6
BMP6 or Bone Morphogenetic Protein 6 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the BMP6 gene. BMP6 is a member of the bone morphogenetic protein family which is part of the transforming growth factor-beta superfamily. The superfamily includes large families of growth and differentiation factors.
Function[edit | edit source]
BMP6 is a potent inducer of bone and cartilage development. It is involved in a variety of biological processes including cell growth, apoptosis, morphogenesis, development and immune response. BMP6 signals through the formation of a heteromeric complex of two type I and two type II serine/threonine kinase receptors.
Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]
BMP6 plays a crucial role in the regulation of iron metabolism. It is a key regulator of hepcidin expression, the main hormone responsible for the control of iron homeostasis. Mutations in the BMP6 gene have been associated with iron overload disorders such as hemochromatosis.
Research[edit | edit source]
Research on BMP6 has been focused on its role in osteogenesis and chondrogenesis, as well as its potential therapeutic applications in bone regeneration and repair. Studies have also been conducted on its role in iron metabolism and related disorders.
