BMP7 or Bone Morphogenetic Protein 7 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the BMP7 gene. BMP7 belongs to the bone morphogenetic protein family which is part of the transforming growth factor-beta superfamily. The superfamily includes large families of growth and differentiation factors.

Function[edit | edit source]

BMP7 is a potent inducer of bone formation and regeneration. It is expressed in the kidney and bladder with lower levels in the brain. BMP7 is known to control the development of metanephric kidney and eye. It also plays a role in the adult kidney in certain physiological and pathological conditions. BMP7 has been shown to regulate the development and function of organs and tissues such as the eye, tooth enamel, and skeleton.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

BMP7 has been implicated in a variety of clinical conditions. It has potential therapeutic uses in renal diseases, bone and joint disorders, and eye diseases. In renal diseases, BMP7 has been shown to counteract the fibrotic effects of transforming growth factor-beta in kidney disease models. In bone and joint disorders, BMP7 has been used in orthopedic surgery to promote bone growth and healing. In eye diseases, BMP7 has been shown to play a role in the development and maintenance of the retina and lens.
