Bellingham

Bellingham is a city in Whatcom County, Washington, United States. It is the county seat and the largest city in Whatcom County. Bellingham is located 52 miles (84 km) southeast of Vancouver, 90 miles (145 km) north of Seattle, and 21 miles (34 km) south of the Canada–United States border. The city encompasses the former towns of Fairhaven, Whatcom, Sehome, and Bellingham, which were consolidated into the present city in 1903.

History

The area now known as Bellingham was originally inhabited by the Lummi and Nooksack tribes. European settlers arrived in the mid-19th century, and the city was named after Sir William Bellingham, a British Navy officer. The discovery of coal in the area in the 1850s led to the establishment of the towns of Whatcom and Sehome. The arrival of the Great Northern Railway in 1891 spurred further growth and development.
