Biancolella
Biancolella is a white wine grape variety primarily grown in the Campania region of Italy. It is known for producing wines with a distinctive aromatic profile and is often used in the production of both varietal wines and blends.
History[edit | edit source]
Biancolella is believed to have ancient origins, with its cultivation dating back to the time of the Ancient Greeks who colonized southern Italy. The grape is thought to have been brought to the island of Ischia, where it has become one of the most important varieties.
Viticulture[edit | edit source]
Biancolella vines are typically grown on the volcanic soils of Campania, which contribute to the unique characteristics of the wine. The grape is well-suited to the warm Mediterranean climate of the region, thriving in the sunny and dry conditions. The vines are often trained in the traditional pergola system, which helps to protect the grapes from excessive sun exposure and allows for good air circulation.
Wine Regions[edit | edit source]
While Biancolella is most closely associated with the island of Ischia, it is also grown in other parts of Campania, including the provinces of Avellino and Benevento. The grape is a key component in the production of Ischia DOC wines, where it is often blended with other local varieties such as Forastera.
Wine Characteristics[edit | edit source]
Biancolella wines are typically light to medium-bodied with a pale straw color. They are known for their floral and fruity aromas, often featuring notes of white flowers, citrus, and stone fruits. On the palate, these wines are fresh and crisp, with a balanced acidity that makes them particularly refreshing.
Food Pairing[edit | edit source]
Biancolella wines pair well with a variety of dishes, particularly those featuring seafood, which is abundant in the coastal regions of Campania. The wine's acidity and freshness complement dishes such as grilled fish, shellfish, and light pasta dishes with lemon or herb-based sauces.
