Big Boy Restaurants

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Big Boy Restaurants is an American restaurant chain that was founded in 1936 by Bob Wian in Glendale, California. The chain is best known for its trademark Big Boy mascot, a chubby boy in red-and-white checkered overalls holding a double-decker cheeseburger.

History[edit | edit source]

Bob Wian sold his car to purchase a small hamburger stand in Glendale, California, which he named Bob's Pantry. One night, Wian decided to create something different to attract customers and came up with a double-decker hamburger. This burger, which later became known as the Big Boy, was an instant success.

In 1952, Wian began franchising Big Boy, with Frisch's becoming the first franchisee. Today, Big Boy Restaurants operates in several states across the U.S., as well as in Japan.

Menu[edit | edit source]

The menu at Big Boy Restaurants includes a variety of items, such as the original double-decker hamburger, sandwiches, salads, and breakfast items. The chain is also known for its milkshakes and desserts.

Big Boy Mascot[edit | edit source]

The Big Boy mascot is a key part of the restaurant's branding. The mascot, a chubby boy in red-and-white checkered overalls holding a double-decker cheeseburger, was introduced in the early years of the restaurant's operation. The mascot has undergone several redesigns over the years, but the basic concept has remained the same.
