Bjørn Aage Ibsen (August 30, 1915 – August 7, 2007) was a Danish anesthesiologist who is considered the founding father of intensive care medicine. His pioneering work in the field of anesthesiology and the development of the first intensive care unit (ICU) has had a profound impact on modern medicine.

Bjørn Aage Ibsen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. He studied medicine at the University of Copenhagen, where he graduated in 1940. Following his graduation, Ibsen trained in anesthesiology and became interested in the management of patients with severe respiratory failure.

Career and Contributions[edit | edit source]

In 1952, during a polio epidemic in Copenhagen, Ibsen made a groundbreaking contribution to the field of medicine. At that time, many patients with poliomyelitis were dying from respiratory failure. Ibsen proposed the use of positive pressure ventilation to assist these patients. He set up a temporary intensive care unit at the Blegdams Hospital in Copenhagen, where he successfully treated patients using manual ventilation techniques.

This innovative approach led to the establishment of the first dedicated intensive care unit (ICU) in the world. Ibsen's work demonstrated the importance of specialized care for critically ill patients and laid the foundation for the development of modern intensive care medicine.
