Black Maternal Health Caucus
Black Maternal Health Caucus is a congressional caucus within the United States House of Representatives. It was established to address the maternal mortality and maternal morbidity crisis affecting black women in the United States. The caucus aims to raise awareness, promote evidence-based policies, and drive legislative action to improve health outcomes for black mothers.
Formation and Purpose[edit | edit source]
The Black Maternal Health Caucus was founded in April 2019 by Representatives Alma Adams (D-NC) and Lauren Underwood (D-IL). The formation of the caucus was motivated by the disproportionately high rates of maternal mortality and morbidity among black women, who are more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than their white counterparts. The caucus seeks to address the systemic inequalities and healthcare disparities that contribute to these outcomes.
Goals and Objectives[edit | edit source]
The primary goals of the Black Maternal Health Caucus include:
- Raising awareness about the black maternal health crisis in the U.S.
- Crafting and advancing legislation aimed at reducing maternal mortality and morbidity rates among black women.
- Encouraging evidence-based practices and policies within the healthcare system to ensure equitable care for all mothers.
- Collaborating with stakeholders, including healthcare providers, advocacy groups, and families affected by maternal health issues, to develop comprehensive solutions.
Legislative Efforts[edit | edit source]
Since its inception, the Black Maternal Health Caucus has been instrumental in introducing and supporting legislation focused on improving maternal health outcomes. Notable legislative efforts include the introduction of the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act, a comprehensive package of bills addressing various aspects of the maternal health crisis, such as access to healthcare, social determinants of health, and the expansion of maternal health research and practices.
Impact and Challenges[edit | edit source]
The caucus has made significant strides in bringing national attention to the issue of black maternal health. Through its advocacy and legislative efforts, it has contributed to a growing recognition of maternal health disparities as a critical public health issue. However, challenges remain, including the need for sustained political will, adequate funding, and systemic changes within the healthcare system to ensure that all women have access to high-quality, respectful, and equitable maternal care.
