Bob Wright was born on April 23, 1943, in New York City. He attended Chaminade High School in Mineola, New York. Wright went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree from the College of the Holy Cross in 1965. He later received a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1968.

Wright began his career in the legal field, working as an attorney for the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). He later joined General Electric (GE) in 1969, where he held various positions over the years.

In 1986, Bob Wright was appointed as the President and CEO of NBC, a major American television network. Under his leadership, NBC expanded its programming and became a dominant force in the television industry. Wright played a crucial role in the acquisition of Universal Pictures in 2004, leading to the formation of NBCUniversal. He served as the Chairman and CEO of NBCUniversal until his retirement in 2007.

Bob Wright and his wife, Suzanne Wright, co-founded Autism Speaks in 2005 after their grandson was diagnosed with autism.
