Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) is a Hindu denomination within the Swaminarayan Sampradaya. It was established in 1907 by Shastriji Maharaj in the town of Bochasan, Gujarat, India. BAPS is known for its spiritual, cultural, and humanitarian activities, and it has a significant following both in India and internationally.

History[edit | edit source]

The origins of BAPS can be traced back to the teachings of Swaminarayan, who founded the Swaminarayan Sampradaya in the early 19th century. Shastriji Maharaj, a prominent disciple of Swaminarayan, established BAPS to propagate the doctrine of Akshar-Purushottam Upasana, which emphasizes the worship of Akshar (the divine abode) and Purushottam (the supreme deity).

Beliefs and Practices[edit | edit source]

BAPS adheres to the teachings of Swaminarayan and emphasizes the importance of living a morally and spiritually disciplined life. Key practices include daily worship, bhajan (devotional singing), katha (spiritual discourses), and seva (selfless service). The organization also promotes vegetarianism, abstinence from alcohol and drugs, and celibacy for its sadhus (monks).

Temples and Activities[edit | edit source]

BAPS is renowned for its grand Swaminarayan temples (mandirs) around the world. These temples serve as centers for spiritual activities, cultural events, and community services. Notable temples include the Akshardham temples in Delhi and Gandhinagar, and the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in London.

Humanitarian Efforts[edit | edit source]

BAPS is actively involved in various humanitarian efforts, including disaster relief, medical camps, educational initiatives, and environmental conservation. The organization operates schools, hospitals, and community centers to serve the needs of society.

Leadership[edit | edit source]

The spiritual leadership of BAPS has been passed down through a succession of gurus. After Shastriji Maharaj, the mantle was taken up by Yogiji Maharaj, followed by Pramukh Swami Maharaj, and currently, Mahant Swami Maharaj leads the organization.

Global Presence[edit | edit source]

BAPS has a significant global presence with temples and centers in countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and many others. The organization conducts regular spiritual and cultural programs to cater to the needs of the Indian diaspora and promote Hindu culture worldwide.
