Bone morphogenetic protein 8B
Bone Morphogenetic Protein 8B (BMP8B) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the BMP8B gene. BMP8B belongs to the Bone Morphogenetic Protein (BMP) family, which is part of the Transforming Growth Factor Beta (TGF-beta) superfamily. The superfamily includes large families of growth and differentiation factors.
Function[edit | edit source]
BMP8B is a potent regulator of energy balance and its function is conserved from rodents to humans. It is involved in the regulation of Brown Adipose Tissue (BAT) thermogenesis and the browning of white adipose tissue. BMP8B increases the sensitivity of BAT to sympathetic nervous system input, thus enhancing thermogenesis. It also stimulates the release of Adiponectin, an adipocyte-derived hormone that has been implicated in the metabolic syndrome.
Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]
Alterations in BMP8B levels have been associated with obesity and diabetes. Studies have shown that BMP8B levels are reduced in the adipose tissue of obese humans and mice. Furthermore, BMP8B-deficient mice are prone to obesity and insulin resistance, suggesting a potential role for BMP8B in the pathogenesis of these conditions.
