Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination
PurposeAssessment of aphasia

The Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination (BDAE) is a comprehensive tool used to evaluate a wide range of language impairments associated with aphasia. Developed by Harold Goodglass and Edith Kaplan, the BDAE is designed to assess the presence and type of aphasia, as well as the severity of the condition. It is widely used in clinical settings to help diagnose language disorders resulting from brain damage, such as that caused by stroke or traumatic brain injury.

History[edit | edit source]

The BDAE was first published in 1972 and has undergone several revisions to improve its accuracy and applicability. The test was developed at the Boston Veterans Administration Medical Center and has become one of the most widely used aphasia assessments in the world.

Structure[edit | edit source]

The BDAE consists of a series of subtests that evaluate different aspects of language function, including:

Each subtest is designed to assess specific language abilities, allowing clinicians to identify patterns of impairment that correspond to different types of aphasia, such as Broca's aphasia, Wernicke's aphasia, and Global aphasia.

Administration[edit | edit source]

The BDAE is typically administered by a trained speech-language pathologist and can take several hours to complete, depending on the patient's level of impairment. The test is scored based on the patient's performance in each subtest, and the results are used to determine the type and severity of aphasia.

Interpretation[edit | edit source]

The results of the BDAE provide a detailed profile of the patient's language abilities, which can be used to guide treatment planning and monitor progress over time. The test is particularly useful for distinguishing between different types of aphasia and for identifying specific areas of language impairment that may benefit from targeted therapy.
