Bowmore distillery

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Bowmore Distillery is a distillery that produces Scotch whisky on the isle of Islay, an island of the Inner Hebrides. The distillery, which lies on the South Eastern shore of Loch Indaal, is one of the oldest in Scotland and is said to have been established in 1779. The distillery is owned by Morrison Bowmore Distillers Ltd, a holding company owned by Japanese drinks company Suntory. Morrison Bowmore also own the Auchentoshan and Glen Garioch distilleries and produce the McClelland's Single Malt range of bottlings.

History[edit | edit source]

The Bowmore Distillery was established in 1779 by a local merchant, John P. Simson, before passing into the ownership of the Mutter family, a family of German descent. James Mutter, head of the family, also owned a small fleet of trading ships, which were used to import barley and export whisky. During the Mutter period, the distillery increased in size and range. The distillery was bought by Morrison's Bowmore Distillery, Ltd. in 1963.

Production[edit | edit source]

Bowmore Distillery sources its water from the River Laggan, which is renowned for its rich peat. The distillery's production process includes malting its own barley, which allows for close control over the flavor of the final product. The distillery uses a traditional malting floor, which is one of only a few still in existence. The malt is left to germinate for a week before it is moved to the kiln where it is smoked over a peat fire.

Products[edit | edit source]

Bowmore produces a range of single malt whiskies: the core range includes a no-age-statement (NAS) Small Batch, 12 Year Old, 15 Year Old 'Darkest', 18 Year Old, and 25 Year Old. There are also several limited edition bottlings that have been released over the years.
