Branch Tanner Archer (December 13, 1790 – September 22, 1856) was an American lawyer, soldier, and politician who played a significant role in the Texas Revolution.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Branch T. Archer was born in Fairfax County, Virginia on December 13, 1790. He pursued a career in medicine and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1808. He practiced medicine in Virginia before moving to Texas.

Texas Revolution[edit | edit source]

Archer moved to Texas in 1831, where he quickly became involved in the political and military struggles of the region. He was a delegate to the Convention of 1832 and the Convention of 1833, which were early efforts by Texians to address grievances with the Mexican government.

In 1835, Archer was elected as a delegate to the Consultation, a meeting that sought to establish a provisional government for Texas. He was appointed as the chairman of the General Council, the governing body of the provisional government.

Later Life and Legacy[edit | edit source]

After the Texas Revolution, Archer continued to be active in Texas politics. He served as the Secretary of War in the Republic of Texas under President David G. Burnet. Archer later returned to his medical practice and also engaged in farming.

Branch T. Archer died on September 22, 1856, in Brazoria County, Texas. He is remembered as a key figure in the early history of Texas.
