Brassica tournefortii

Brassica tournefortii is a species of flowering plant in the mustard family known by the common names Asian mustard and Sahara mustard. It is native to the deserts of North Africa, the Middle East, and southern Europe and is known in many other parts of the world as an invasive species.

Description[edit | edit source]

Brassica tournefortii is an annual herb producing an erect stem up to a meter tall. The leaves are up to 20 centimeters long, the lower ones lobed or divided into leaflets. The inflorescence is a raceme of mustardlike flowers with four yellow petals. The fruit is a straight, flat silique up to five centimeters long.

Distribution and habitat[edit | edit source]

Brassica tournefortii is native to the deserts of North Africa, the Middle East, and southern Europe. It has become naturalized in other desert regions of the world, and is a noxious weed in many areas, such as the Sonoran Desert and Mojave Desert in the United States.

Impact as an invasive species[edit | edit source]

Brassica tournefortii is considered a significant invasive species in many parts of the world. It is a hardy plant that can survive in harsh desert conditions, and it can outcompete native plant species for resources. This can lead to a decrease in biodiversity and can disrupt local ecosystems.

Control and management[edit | edit source]

Efforts to control the spread of Brassica tournefortii include manual removal and the use of herbicides. However, these methods can be labor-intensive and costly. Research is ongoing into biological control methods, such as the use of insects or diseases that specifically target this species.
