Brian Skerry

Brian Skerry is an American underwater photographer and photojournalist specializing in marine biological and underwater archaeological subjects. He is a contributing photographer for National Geographic Magazine and has shot stories worldwide about ocean and underwater themes.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Skerry was born in Massachusetts, United States. He developed an interest in photography at a young age and later combined this with his fascination for the underwater world. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Media and Journalism from Worcester State University.

Career[edit | edit source]

Skerry began his career as a photojournalist in 1986. He has since spent over 10,000 hours underwater using his camera to tell the story of some of the most elusive creatures in the world. His first assignment for National Geographic was in 1998, and he has since completed more than 20 features for the magazine.

Skerry's work focuses on the issues of ocean conservation, including the problems of overfishing, climate change, and pollution. His images are acclaimed for their aesthetic sense of composition, depth, and sharp detail, and for their power to communicate complex scientific concepts and urgent environmental issues.

Skerry has been recognized with numerous awards for his work, including the prestigious World Press Photo for Nature and the Peter Benchley Award for Excellence in Media. In 2017, he was named a National Geographic Society Photography Fellow, a distinction reserved for those who have made significant contributions to the field of photography.
