Bronx is one of the five boroughs of New York City. It is located in the U.S. state of New York. The Bronx is the northernmost of the five boroughs and is the only one that is primarily located on the mainland. It is bordered by Westchester County to the north, the Hudson River to the west, the East River to the south, and the Long Island Sound to the east.

The Bronx was originally part of Westchester County and was annexed to New York City in two stages: the western portion in 1874 and the eastern portion in 1895. The borough was named after the Bronck family, who were early settlers in the area.

The Bronx covers a total area of 57 square miles (147 km²), of which 42 square miles (109 km²) is land and 15 square miles (39 km²) is water. The Bronx is characterized by a diverse topography that includes flatlands, hills, and valleys. The highest point in the Bronx is Riverdale, which rises to 280 feet (85 m) above sea level.
