The Brunsbüttel Nuclear Power Plant (Kernkraftwerk Brunsbüttel) was a nuclear power plant located in Brunsbüttel, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It was operated by Vattenfall and utilized a boiling water reactor (BWR) supplied by Siemens. The plant had a single reactor with an electrical capacity of 806 MW.
History[edit | edit source]
Construction of the Brunsbüttel Nuclear Power Plant began in 1969, and it was commissioned in 1976. The plant was part of Germany's nuclear energy program, which aimed to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and increase energy security. The plant operated for several decades before being decommissioned in 2011 as part of Germany's nuclear phase-out policy following the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in Japan.
Design and Operation[edit | edit source]
The Brunsbüttel plant featured a boiling water reactor (BWR), a type of light water reactor where water used as a coolant and moderator boils directly in the reactor core. The steam produced drives a turbine connected to a generator to produce electricity. The reactor was supplied by Siemens, a major German engineering company.
The plant's cooling system utilized water from the Elbe River, which was essential for maintaining safe operating temperatures within the reactor.
Decommissioning[edit | edit source]
Following the decision to phase out nuclear power in Germany, the Brunsbüttel Nuclear Power Plant was permanently shut down in 2011. The decommissioning process involves dismantling the reactor and associated structures, safely managing radioactive materials, and restoring the site for other uses. This process is expected to take several years to complete.
