C3H8O[edit | edit source]

C3H8O, also known as propane-1-ol or n-propanol, is a colorless, flammable liquid alcohol. It is a primary alcohol with the molecular formula C3H8O, consisting of three carbon atoms, eight hydrogen atoms, and one oxygen atom. Propane-1-ol is commonly used as a solvent, in the production of pharmaceuticals, and as a precursor for the synthesis of other chemicals.

Chemical Properties[edit | edit source]

Propane-1-ol has a molecular weight of 60.10 g/mol and a boiling point of 97.2 °C (207 °F). It is soluble in water and miscible with many organic solvents. The alcohol group (-OH) in propane-1-ol allows it to participate in various chemical reactions, such as oxidation, esterification, and dehydration.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Propane-1-ol has a wide range of applications in different industries. It is commonly used as a solvent in the manufacturing of coatings, paints, and inks. Its solubility in water makes it an effective ingredient in cleaning products, such as detergents and disinfectants.

In the pharmaceutical industry, propane-1-ol is used as a solvent for the extraction of active compounds from plants. It is also utilized as a raw material in the production of various pharmaceutical drugs, including antibiotics and antiseptics.

Furthermore, propane-1-ol serves as a precursor for the synthesis of other chemicals. It can be converted into propyl acetate, a solvent used in the production of lacquers and varnishes. Additionally, it is used in the synthesis of plasticizers, flavors, and fragrances.

Safety Considerations[edit | edit source]

Propane-1-ol is flammable and should be handled with caution. It is important to store it in a cool, well-ventilated area away from sources of ignition. When working with propane-1-ol, proper personal protective equipment, such as gloves and goggles, should be worn to prevent skin and eye contact.

Inhalation or ingestion of propane-1-ol can be harmful and may cause irritation to the respiratory and gastrointestinal systems. In case of accidental exposure, immediate medical attention should be sought.
