CA125

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

CA125 is a protein that is often used as a tumor marker or biomarker in gynecology and particularly in the diagnosis and management of ovarian cancer. The CA125 level is measured through a blood test, and elevated levels can indicate the presence of ovarian cancer, although it is not specific to ovarian cancer alone. CA125 stands for Cancer Antigen 125, which is a protein that can be found on the surface of ovarian cancer cells and is released into the bloodstream.

Overview[edit | edit source]

CA125 is produced by a variety of tissues and organs in the body but is most commonly associated with ovarian cancer cells. It is important to note that while elevated levels of CA125 can suggest the presence of ovarian cancer, they can also be elevated in other conditions such as endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, menstruation, and pregnancy, as well as other types of cancers.

Clinical Use[edit | edit source]

The primary use of CA125 testing is in the monitoring of women diagnosed with ovarian cancer. The CA125 test is used to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment and to check for cancer recurrence. It is not used as a sole diagnostic tool for ovarian cancer because it can produce false positives and negatives. For example, not all women with ovarian cancer will have elevated CA125 levels, and some women without ovarian cancer will have high levels of CA125.

Limitations[edit | edit source]

The limitations of the CA125 test include its lack of specificity and sensitivity. Because elevated CA125 levels can be seen in a variety of conditions, a high CA125 level alone cannot confirm the presence of ovarian cancer. Similarly, a normal CA125 level does not guarantee that ovarian cancer is not present. Therefore, the CA125 test is used in conjunction with other diagnostic methods, such as ultrasound and biopsy, to diagnose ovarian cancer.

Research and Developments[edit | edit source]

Research is ongoing to improve the sensitivity and specificity of CA125 testing and to develop new biomarkers that can be used alongside CA125 for better diagnosis and management of ovarian cancer. Scientists are also exploring the role of CA125 in other cancers and diseases to understand its full potential as a biomarker.

Conclusion[edit | edit source]

While the CA125 test is a valuable tool in the management of ovarian cancer, it is not without its limitations. Its effectiveness is enhanced when used in combination with other diagnostic methods. Ongoing research aims to improve the utility of CA125 and to find additional biomarkers for ovarian cancer.
