CKLF like MARVEL transmembrane domain containing 6

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

CKLF Like MARVEL Transmembrane Domain Containing 6 (also known as CMTM6) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the CMTM6 gene. It is a member of the chemokine-like factor (CKLF) gene superfamily.

Function[edit | edit source]

CMTM6 is a ubiquitously expressed protein that plays a crucial role in maintaining the cell surface expression of PD-L1, which is a key regulator of immune response. By controlling the expression of PD-L1, CMTM6 can influence the immune system's ability to fight off cancer cells.

Structure[edit | edit source]

The CMTM6 protein contains a MARVEL domain, a conserved protein module found in a number of proteins with diverse functions, such as tight junction formation and vesicle trafficking. The MARVEL domain is involved in the biogenesis and function of various types of membrane compartments.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

CMTM6 has been implicated in various types of cancer, including lung cancer, melanoma, and breast cancer. High expression of CMTM6 has been associated with poor prognosis in these cancers.

Research[edit | edit source]

Research is ongoing to develop drugs that can inhibit the function of CMTM6, with the aim of enhancing the effectiveness of immunotherapy in cancer treatment.
