Calandrinia
Calandrinia is a genus of flowering plants in the family Montiaceae. The genus is native to Australia, South America, and North America. It includes both annual and perennial species, many of which are known for their attractive flowers and succulent leaves.
Description[edit | edit source]
Calandrinia species are typically herbaceous plants, ranging from small annuals to larger perennials. They often have fleshy, succulent leaves that help them retain water in arid environments. The flowers are usually brightly colored, with hues of pink, red, purple, or white, and they are often borne in clusters.
Habitat[edit | edit source]
Calandrinia species are adapted to a variety of habitats, including deserts, coastal areas, and rocky outcrops. They are particularly well-suited to dry, sandy soils and can often be found in regions with low rainfall.
Cultivation[edit | edit source]
Many Calandrinia species are cultivated as ornamental plants due to their attractive flowers and foliage. They are often used in rock gardens, xeriscaping, and as ground cover. These plants prefer well-drained soil and full sun but can tolerate partial shade. They are generally drought-tolerant and require minimal watering once established.
Notable Species[edit | edit source]
- Calandrinia grandiflora - Known for its large, showy flowers.
- Calandrinia spectabilis - A popular ornamental species with vibrant purple flowers.
- Calandrinia ciliata - Commonly known as Redmaids, this species is native to North America.
