Calcium aminosalicylate

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Calcium Aminosalicylate is a type of drug used in the treatment of tuberculosis. It is a second-line drug, meaning it is used when first-line drugs are not effective or cannot be used due to side effects.

Chemical Structure[edit | edit source]

Calcium Aminosalicylate is a salicylate compound, which means it is derived from salicylic acid. It has a calcium ion attached to an aminosalicylate molecule. The chemical formula for calcium aminosalicylate is C7H6CaNO3.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

Calcium Aminosalicylate works by inhibiting the growth of mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacteria that causes tuberculosis. It does this by interfering with the bacteria's ability to synthesize folic acid, a necessary component for the bacteria's growth and reproduction.

Usage[edit | edit source]

Calcium Aminosalicylate is used in the treatment of tuberculosis, particularly in cases where first-line drugs such as isoniazid and rifampicin are not effective or cannot be used due to side effects. It is often used in combination with other second-line drugs to increase its effectiveness.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Like all drugs, calcium aminosalicylate can cause side effects. These can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, it can cause more serious side effects such as hepatitis or hypersensitivity reactions.
