Cancer plebejus
Cancer plebejus is a species of crab that belongs to the Cancer genus. It is commonly known as the Plebeian Crab and is found in various parts of the world, including the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean.
Description[edit | edit source]
The Cancer plebejus is a medium-sized crab with a broad, oval carapace and robust claws. The carapace is typically a dark brown or black color, while the underside of the crab is a lighter shade. The crab's claws are powerful and are used for both defense and feeding.
Distribution and Habitat[edit | edit source]
The Cancer plebejus is found in both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. In the Pacific, it is commonly found along the coasts of North America, from Alaska to California. In the Atlantic, it is found from Maine to Florida. The crab prefers rocky substrates and is often found in intertidal zones.
Behavior and Diet[edit | edit source]
The Cancer plebejus is a nocturnal species that spends most of the day hiding in crevices and under rocks. It emerges at night to feed on a variety of organisms, including mollusks, worms, and other small invertebrates.
Reproduction[edit | edit source]
The mating season for the Cancer plebejus typically occurs in the spring and summer months. After mating, the female carries the fertilized eggs under her abdomen until they hatch. The larvae then undergo several molts before reaching adulthood.
Conservation Status[edit | edit source]
The Cancer plebejus is not currently listed as threatened or endangered. However, like many marine species, it is potentially vulnerable to habitat loss and pollution.
